Innovation city "Skolkovo" - exposition theme of the Russian pavilion at the XIII Architecture Biennale in Venice
On the 2nd of August there was a press conference, dedicated to Russian pavilion at the XIII Architecture Biennale that will be opened on the 29th of August 2012 in Venice. The exposition was presented by a commissioner of the pavilion, Grigory Revzin, and curators – architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov.
This time the subject of exposition is the innovation city „Skolkovo“ – one of the largest and the most innovative Russian projects today, it was worked out by the most famous architects from all over the world, including a curator of the architecture Biennale in Venice David Chipperfield.
Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov were chosen as curators of this exposition not accidentally – bureau „SPEECH Tchoban & Kuznetsov“ is one of the general planners of „Skolkovo“. Both architects know the project not only „from inside“, but also have an experience in exposition work in the Russian pavilion in 2010 at the XII Architecture Biennale, where they together with Grigory Revzin and Pavel Horoshilov presented the project “Russia Factory“, dedicated to ways of development of small Russian towns on the example of Vyshny Volochyok.
At the press conference Sergei Tchoban told about architectural peculiarities of the Russian pavilion, built almost 100 years ago by the project of A.B.Shusev, and its influence on the exhibition decision. As is known, the pavilion consists of two premises – on the first and second floor – that have private enters and don’t connected to each other. In this case the exposition is divided into two sections. In the premises on the first floor there will be displayed history of predecessor of „Skolkovo“ – soviet science cities. In three halls on the second floor there will be a project of the innovation center „Skolkovo“ itself. Difference between „innovation city“ and „science city“ is evident: science cities were closed and isolated as opposed to Skolkovo project, which from the very begining even at organizartion of projecting process, based on collective nature and holding of competitions, shows its openness and integration into the world context. The contrast, which is traci ng on t he level of concept of the past and future research cities, will be highlighted in its exhibition decision. In the exposition, dedicated to Skolkovo, there will be presented 30 winners of the first round of the competition in residential quarters planning and more detailed information about 10 finalists, who are already engaged in projecting of innovation city. Besides, innovation orientation of Skolkovo will be also stressed by use of modern electronic technics and the newest IT-technologies, due to which the visitors will be able by themselves to research and be absorbed steadily in the world of innovation city „Skolkovo“, which is virtual yet, but becoms more and more real with each day. Uniqueness of the exposition is that during 3 months of work of Biennale there will be a reflection of all the changes that are going on the project. As Sergey Kuznetsov said at the press conference - „we tried to create some kind of monitor or transmitor that allows to trace all the chan ges in t he project during the Biennale and afterwards“
„Skolkovo is a high-tech project, it’s all about innovation, about new level of living, about how science and modern technologies come into human’s life. That is why our exposition is exceptional one this year. We have created a space that is physical and virtual at the same time.“ – Grigory Revzin, commissioner oft he pavilion, says.
