UIA LAUNCHES TWO COMPETITIONS IN PREPARATION FOR ITS UPCOMING CONGRESS
Two international competitions are being organised within the framework of the next UIA congress in Turin, 29 June to 3 July 2008. UIA INFORMATION POINT: competition open to architects under 35 years old. A competition to illustrate the congress theme: Transmitting Architecture. The objective is to create a haven for architecture and the UIA in the city of Turin, a place for people to meet and relax, dedicated to urban democracy. The info point should be available for use day and night, whether open or closed, it should be a type of architecture centre. A total of 18 000 Euro in prizes will be awarded in the framework of this competition. The deadline for online registration and submission of entries in .pdf format is 11 March 2008.

TOTEM: international competition for students of architecture
Students will be asked to design a totem, an architectural object for communication, information, and exchange anchored in one of the following three types of environments: a social context (poverty), un natural context (sustainability), un urban context (metropolis). A total of 15 000 Euro in prizes will be distributed within the framework of this competition. The deadline for online registration and submission of entries in .pdf format is 27 March 2008.

2008 VELUX AWARD - THE LIGHT OF TOMORROW
Until 8 March 2008, students of architecture from around the world are invited to register online to participate in the third edition of the International VELUX Award on the theme The Light of Tomorrow. This series of competitions hopes to emphasise sunlight as a natural source of luminosity and energy; to highlight its contribution to visual quality and comfort in both internal and urban spaces or to the conception of sustainable architecture, in harmony with the cycles of nature.

On 14 to 16 February 2008, the city of Melbourne will host the EcoEDGE2 international conference. The programme ensure the exploration of the challenges currently facing the world’s large urban centres through a dialogue, involving planners, sustainability experts, politicians, and renowned architects such as: Gerard Evenden, Stefan Behnisch, Helle Søholt, and Neville Mars. The conference is supported by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
THE SAIA HOSTS THE UIA AND AUA COUNCILS IN DURBAN
On 17 and 18 February 2008, the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) will host the 108th session of the UIA Council in Durban. The Institute has also invited the African Union of Architects’ Council (AUA) to meet in Durban on 14 February. A meeting of the SAIA Board will be held on 16 February along with a joint coordination meeting between the AUA and the SAIA. A programme of conferences has also been organised during this period.

ARCHITECTURE IN SITE AND AGE
On 8 March 2008, Budapest will host the second international architecture conference on the theme Architecture in Site and Age. This event is organised by a group of architecture periodicals from Hungary, Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, with the support of the Hungarian Association of Architects and the University of Budapest. Among the main speakers are Daniel Libeskind, Tuomo Siitonen, Louis Becker (Henning Larsen Architects), and Teemu Kurkela.

URBAN ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL
The RAIC Foundation, in cooperation with the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) is offering a 5 000 $ scholarship to a Canadian student whose Master’s project on sustainable building design or research is selected as the most promising. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of ‘green’ designers by promoting and encouraging sustainable research and design in Canadian schools of architecture.

WORLD CONFERENCE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CITIES
On 13 to 16 February, the world conference on the development of cities will take place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, under the auspices UNESCO and UN-Habitat. This international platform for the sharing of information and know-how will address four main themes: right to the city; governance and democracy in cities; local development in cities; sustainability and the network city.

TALL AND GREEN - TYPOLOGY FOR A SUSTAINABLE URBAN FUTURE
On 3 to 5 March 2008, an international congress dedicated to sustainable tall buildings will take place in Dubai on the theme Tall and Green - new architectural and urban typologies appearing within the new structure of contemporary cities. Speakers for this event include Hani Rashid, Rem Koolhaas, Ken Yeang (Llewelyn Davies Yeang), William Baker (SOM), Adrian Smith , and Robert Fox.
EUROSOLAR 2008
On 11 to 14 March 2008, Berlin will host the 7th edition of this conference dedicated to solar energy, architecture and urban planning. Under the title Sun and Sense, the conference will examine issues such as the use of renewable sources of energy in the metropolis and in developing countries, or the use of 100% renewable energy in urban areas. Among the principal speakers are Thomas Herzog and Manfred Hegger, former director of the UIA work programme on architecture for a sustainable future.
2008 WORLD HABITAT AWARDS
Applications for the World Habitat Awards are open. These prizes were inaugurated in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation - BSHF as a contribution to the United Year of Shelter for the Homeless. Two prizes of 10 000 £ each are given each year, one to an initiative in the global North, and one to an initiative in the global South. Projects should provide practical, innovative, and sustainable solutions to current housing needs, that can be adapted to different social and economic contexts. The deadline for stage I submission is 1st June 2008.

ARES COMPETITION CATALOGUE
All of the projects submitted in the competition for bioclimatic shelters organised by the ARES work programme, can be seen in the catalogue published by the Technical Chamber of Greece. The catalogue includes 65 color pages illustrating the entries and also presents the activities of the ARES work programme.
