From 29 June to 3 July 2008, the world’s architects will meet in Turin, Italy, for the twenty-third world congress of the International Union of Architects, dedicated to the idea of Transmitting Architecture. egistration fees have been fixed at 100 Euro for congress participants and 50 Euro for students and accompanying persons. Registrations are being taken on-line, through the congress website. The registration fee must be paid in Euro, either on-line by credit card or Paypal, or by bank transfer.

UIA SUPPORTS MOSTRA CONVEGNO EXPOCOMFORT 2008, IN MILAN

On 11 to 15 March, the 2008 edition of the international conference and trade fair Mostra Convegno Expocomfort – MCE will take place in Milan, Italy. Organised by Fiera Milano, this biennial event will spotlight the latest innovations in the areas of heating, energy performance, cooling, and water. In parallel to MCE 2008, two building industry trade fairs will be organised: NEXT ENERGY will be dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources while EXPOBAGNO will spotlight products for the bathroom.

THE PRIME PROPERTY AWARD 2008

Union Investment Real Estate AG is sponsoring an international prize to recognise property investment and sustainable development projects in Europe. The projects must ensure not only financial success but also satisfy social aspirations. Realisations must make an important contribution to the quality of urban life and to improving the surrounding area. With prize money totalling 30 000 Euro, this competition is open to architects and urban planners, in conjunction with real-estate investors, who are asked to submit a project realised between 2000 and 2007 in one of the European Union countries.

2008, OSCAR NIEMEYER YEAR

To honour the world-renowned architect who celebrated his 100th birthday on 15 December 2007, the Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced that 2008 will be Oscar Niemeyer Year. On this  occasion, his last 23 works were classed as historic monuments, and Oscar Niemeyer was awarded Brazil’s Cultural Merit Medal, the Russian People’s Friendship Medal, and was named a Commander in the French Legion of Honour.

EDUCATION, RESEARCH, PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

From 25 to 27 January 2008, the International Association for Humane Habitat will organise an international conference on architectural education, research, and professional practice. The conference will take place at Rizvi Architecture College in Mumbai. The conference is organised with the collaboration of the Indian Institute of Architects and the Commonwealth Association of Architects.

BIENNIAL OF URBAN ARCHITECTURE

From December 2007 until March 1st 2008, the Biennial of Urban Architecture is coorganised by the cities of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The goal of this event is to present the innovations and realisations in both cities, and to highlight their dynamism in the areas of planning, architecture, and culture as well as new technologies in terms of communication and the environment. Focusing on the theme Cities: Decline and
Renaissance, the biennial offers visitors over 100 exhibitions describing the life cycle of cities.

FIGHT THE CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

As part of its ‘Combating Climate Change’ programme, the RIBA will create a series of guides and tools to encourage and help its members to design low carbon buildings. The first three documents are already available:

. A climate change briefing (a highly accessible briefing on climate change and the built
environment)
. A guide to low carbon design tools
. A guide to low-carbon standards and assessment methods.

Three further guides should be available in early 2008.

EURAU 08

On 16 - 19 January 2008, Madrid will host the 4th European Symposium on Research in Architecture and Urban Design. The theme Cultural Landscape will bring together architects, landscape architects, geographers, engineers, art and architecture historians, archaeologists, researchers and students in a variety of related disciplines. The symposium is organised by the Technical University of Madrid, in collaboration with the School of Architecture of Marseille, the School of Architecture and Landscape of Lille and the Association of Superior Institutes of the Cities of Brussels-Liege-Mons. It is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, IFLA, and the UIA.

GLADAC 2008

On 20 to 22 January 2008, Dubai will host the first conference on architecture and landscape in this area of the Middle East. Organised in cooperation with IFLA, the conference will examine the role of modern landscape architecture in sustainable development. Seif Alnaga, Vice-President for region V, will represent the UIA. The conference will be chaired by James Taylor, president of the IFLA committee for Africa.

CREATION OF A MEDITERRANEAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The executive board of UMAR will support the initiative by the Moroccan Order of Architects and the Superior Council of Associations of Spanish Architects for the creation of a Mediterranean school of architecture in Tangier, Morocco. The school will be an international institution of the highest level that conforms to the criteria laid out in the UNESCO-UIA Charter for Architectural Education. By its nature the school will contribute to the diffusion of Mediterranean culture and to increased cooperation between the countries around the Mediterranean Basin. The mythical city of Tangier was chosen for its economic, urban, and cultural namism.

UNBUILT ARCHITECTURE: A CRITICAL AND EDUCATIONAL TOOL

The Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum and the School of Architecture for All (SARCHA) have issued a call for contributions on the theme of the “unbuilt”. Architects, historians, archaeologists, and theorists are invited to submit propositions no later than February 4, 2008. SARCHA will select a variety of propositions to be presented within a year-long programme of research and analysis on the theme.

LEARN ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMME

As laid out in the agreement signed between the UIA and its Spanish Section, the CSCAE will assume the task of setting up and managing the UIA continuing professional development programme through the medium of a commercial entity that will serve as its general operator. The system will consist of an index of resources that lists the professional development courses from around the world that meet a series of criteria and in this way obtain the UIA label. The system is an open, international platform in which any of the UIA Member Sections or working bodies may participate along with other education providers, under the condition that their courses meet the requirements for obtaining the UIA label.

A COMPETITION TO PROMOTE ACCESSIBILITY

Until 30 March 2008, Krzysztof Chwalibog invites architects from the countries in UIA region II to submit exemplary architectural realisations in terms of accessibility for all. The projects will be presented at the 2008 UIA congress in Turin.
