STRENGTHENING TIES BETWEEN UIA AND UMAR

The UIA and the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) signed an agreement of

cooperation with a view to setting up a joint action programme.

This programme will focus particularly on architectural culture: heritage, urban renewal,

renovation and also on sustainable development: environment, energy saving.

In the framework of its partnership with the Holcim Foundation for sustainable

development, the UIA is associated with several of its initiatives such as its Awards.

These regional and global cycles of architectural competitions are future orientated and

tangible visions of sustainable construction.

The Foundation promotes innovative approaches as a way of encouraging technological,

environmental, socio-economic and cultural solutions for buildings and sustainable

construction.

The aim of the Babara Cappochin Prize is to heighten awareness and associate the various

actors in the architectural world –town planners, constructors and clients- with the

promotion of quality planning and construction in natural and urban environments. It is

closely associated with the biennial of architecture in Padua, Italy. The special guest to

the 2009 session will be Zaha Hadid, an exhibition of whose works will be presented.

The prize-money, in total 72 000 euros, will reward architectural realisations completed

between 1 July 2006 and 30 June 2009. Candidatures must reach the organisers by 30

June 2009 at the latest.

2INAUGURATION OF THE ESTONIAN CENTRE OF ARCHITECTURE IN TALLINN

On 7 October 2008, the President of the Union of Estonian Architects (UEA), Ike Volkov

inaugurated the new centre created jointly by the UEA and the Estonian Academy of Arts.

In the perspective of creativity, innovation, economy and sustainability, the mission of

the Centre is to promote the country’s architecture and the development of relations with

all sectors concerned by architecture and urban planning.

From 10 to 11 November 2008, in Dublin, the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland

will organise a new edition of its urban forum, a multidisciplinary training course offered

to architects, landscape architects, engineers, planners and surveyors. The central theme

will focus on urban design in a changing environment.

From 16 to 23 November 2008, the 23rd Congress of the Panamerican Architects will be

held in Tegucigalpa, on the theme: “Architecture and human rights: the futures of

sustainability”. 1500 participants are expected to highlight the architect’s responsibility in

the creation of spaces and cities respectful of human beings and the environment.

Participants will include Mauricio Rivero Borrell, 1st UIA Vice-President, German Suarez

Betancourt, Denise Albuquerque, Antonio Moraes de Castro, and Gabriel Durand

Hollis. The Panamerican Federation of Associations of Architects (FPAA) will hold its

general assembly during the Congress on the 18 and 19 November. Louise Cox, UIA

President, and Jordi Farrando, UIA Secretary General, will participate in the congress.

From 17 to 21 November 2008 the 16th edition of this biennial will be held, on the

theme: “Feeling the architecture of the American continent”. This edition will propose a

retrospective of the last 30 years during which 15 biennials were held without a break

in the cycle. Presented also will be realisations completed between 2004 and 2008 in

American countries in the fields of architectural design, planning, and landscape. Social

habitat and development will be presented through global realisations.

Al Stratford succeeds Hassan Asmal as the head of the South African Institute of

Architects. Architect, inventor, entrepreneur, he is creator of innovative construction

Paule Boutin succeeds to Kiyoshi Matsuzaki, as President of the RAIC. She is in private

practice and actively involved in the activities of the Order of Architects of Quebec as well

as those of the RAIC. “The public at large has become more interested in the architect

over the past few years, which is a very good thing”, said Ms Boutin. “We can benefit

from this interest to explain why architecture is so important”.WIKI: A WEB SITE TO RESPOND TO THE “2030 CHALLENGE”

This site is a tool to allow architects share information on achieving the goals set by the

2030 challenge, that is to say, to make buildings carbon-neutral by 2030. Wiki is open

Commission itself.

From 10 to 12 December 2008, the UIA Professional Practice Commission will meet in

Marrakech on the invitation of the Ordre of Architects of Morocco. On the occasion of

guidelines of the Accord on Recommended International Standards of Professionalism in

Architectural Practice; development of relations with the WTO; Louise Cox and Giancarlo

On 5 November 2008, the Association of Hungarian Architects together with the UIA

Architecture and Renewable Energy Sources programme is organising, in Budapest, a

second conference on zero CO2: sustainable architecture, on the theme “renewable

energies in the built environment: towards a sustainable future”. Four key issues will

structure the debates: innovation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, protection of the

environment. Nikos Fintikakis, Director of the ARES programme will address the

conference during which the European winning projects of the 2008 Holcim Foundation

Prize for sustainable development will be presented.

heritage conservation in Asia and the Pacific. It thus recognises individuals or

After Nairobi in 2002, Barcelona in 2004, Vancouver in 2006, the fourth Urban Forum will

take place in Nanjing, China, from 4 to 6 November 2008 on the theme: “Harmonious

Urbanisation: the challenge of balanced territorial development”. It will focus on examining

one of the most urgent issues confronting the world today: rapid urbanisation and the

consequences on communities, cities, economies and policies. One of the main

challenges is to reduce the expansion of poverty, by improving access for the urban

poors to the basic facilities essential to achieve a sustainable development respectful

of the environment.
