From 29 June to 3 July 2008, the architects of the world will come together in Turin, Italy, for the 23rd world congress of the International Union of Architects to discuss the theme Transmitting Architecture. Registration fees have been set at 100 Euro for participants and 50 Euro for students and accompanying persons. Registrations are made directly on-line on the congress website. Payment of registration fees, exclusively in Euro, can be made on-line by credit card, Paypal, or electronic transfer.

UIA ASSOCIATED IN BUILDING FUTURES GULF BY BATIMAT

On 20 to 23 April 2008, BATIMAT will host four complementary trade fairs in Abu Dhabi, dedicated to building performance in terms of technical innovation, energy consumption, economy, environmental protection, and safety. The fairs will present the latest smart building solutions in the realms of structure, envelope, and comfort. The UIA is a partner in this event, contributing with a series of conferences that will address the themes of architectural fair practice and sustainable development. UIA President Gaetan Siew will participate in the event, and an entire area within the fairs called “The World of Architects” will be dedicated exclusively to promoting the profession.

CRITICAL VISIONS OF GLOBALISATION

On 10 to 12 April 2008, Sydney will host the Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ national conference on the theme Critical Visions: form, representation, and the culture of globalisation. According to Richard Francis Jones, Creative Director of the conference: We seem to be in a period of unparalleled excess, spectacle and formal indulgence played out against a backdrop of environmental crisis, extreme social inequity and cultural alienation. At the same time this appears to be a moment of great formal innovation, genuine creative insight and technological potential. The conference will explore this intense and complex situation through the critical regards of Kenneth Frampton, Michael Hensel, Thomas Herzog, Francine Houben, Christoph Ingenhoven, Quingyun Ma, Brigitte Shim, Billie Tsien, and Chris Wilkinson.

AIA CONFERENCE IN ATHENS

On 10 to 13 April 2008, the American Institute of Architects will host an international conference in Athens on the environment, ecology, and architecture. The event is organised with the support of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the collaboration of the UIA work programme Architecture and Renewable Energy Sources. International personalities from the architectural community including Kenneth Yeang, Alexandros Tombazis, Benjamin Gill, director of BedZed in London, Elisabeth Siola, President of the UIA Hellenic Section, and Nikos Fintikakis, Director of the UIA-ARES work programme.

AIA NATIONAL CONVENTION

From 15 to 17 May 2008, the annual AIA national convention will be held in Boston on the theme “We the people”, where we live, where we work, our place in the world, how we come together, our place on the land. UMAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 4 to 5 April 2008, the Union of Mediterranean Architects will hold its general assembly on the island of Malta. Founded in 1994 in Rabat, Morocco, the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) brings together the national organisations representing the architectural profession in countries around the Mediterranean basin. Its headquarters are in Malta.

ARCHITECTS COUNCIL OF EUROPE CONFERENCE

On 10 April 2008, the Architects Council of Europe invites architects to participate in its conference Designing for the Future: The Market and Quality of Life. The conference, which enjoys the patronage of Mr. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, is addressed primarily to European leaders and decision makers from all levels, who act in matters relating to the built environment. It will present a number of ideas and concrete recommendations in relation to quality and planning that could be adopted and put in place very quickly

BUILDING FOR CULTURE AND CREATIVITY

From 28 April to 1st May 2008, the Centre of Expertise on Culture and Communities at Simon Fraser University and the City of Ottawa will organise an international symposium on cultural infrastructures. Focusing on the theme Creative Construct: building for culture and creativity, the symposium will bring together participants from around the world to exchange the latest ideas and practices on the development of cultural and creative spaces; cultural planning and investment strategies for cultural infrastructure and cultural districts; and collaborative approaches to enhancing the cultural vitality, creative potential, and  competitiveness of cities and communities.

COMMISSION ACTIVITIES

On 28 to 30 March 2008, a series of meetings related to the activities of the UIA Architectural Education commission will take place in Barcelona. Events include a commission session, a meeting of the thematic work groups, and a meeting of the UNESCO-UIA Validation Council for Architectural Education. In addition, on 7 - 9 April 2008, the third session of the invitational round table for architectural education accreditation systems will take place in Canberra, Australia. SHENZHEN CONFERENCE

On 15 and 16 May, the ARES work programme will organise an internationl conference in Shenzhen, PR of China. The conference will focus on the use of renewable energy sources in urban architecture using the city of Shenzhen as an example. More detailed information on this event will be published in the next edition of the UIA e-newsletter.
