The annual Sydney Architecture Festival celebrates the city's architecture and aims to engage the public in exploring aspects in the built environment.

The Festival is presented by the Australian Architecture Association, the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter and the NSW Architects Registration Board.

The 2009 Sydney Architecture Festival is focussed on Circular Quay - the Gateway to Sydney. It will be held on Monday 5 October, World Architecture Day and Habitat Day, the Festival will feature architectural tours of the city; activities at the World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House; talks, exhibitions and kids activities at Customs House; and much more.

About the Sydney Architecture Festival 
The Sydney Architecture Festival is a joint venture between the Australian Architecture Association, Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter) and the NSW Architects Registration Board. Our organisations all have common ground in our efforts to create a better understanding of architecture. The Sydney Architectural Festival aims to:

enable the community to participate in and enjoy the history and architecture of Sydney
engage children and young people in design experiences through competitions and group activities
contribute to community engagement in relation to the challenges of achieving a sustainable built environment
promote Sydney’s cultural identity as a contemporary city of quality architecture
develop partnerships with organisations engaged in activities relevant to our primary objectives of celebration: developing the community’s appreciation and enjoyment of good architecture and education: communicating the importance of good design in achieving a sustainable, healthy and culturally rich built environment.

The Festival is supported by the City of Sydney as part of a funding plan for three years and in 2008 the Festival was sponsored by Stockland and SPUN Architects Group. ABC Local Radio was the media partner.

Event partners include Customs House, Sydney; the Sydney Opera House; Sydney Harbour Federation Trust; Powerhouse Museum, Historic Houses Trust; and the National Trust of Australia (NSW).

Festival activities were focussed on Customs House Sydney and included city architectural tours, talks, exhibitions and kid’s events. In addition to the activities focussed around Customs House, the headline talk for the Festival – Circular Quay- Gateway to the Future was presented at the Utzon Room in the World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House; six architecture practices were open to the public; there was free ferry transport and tours of the industrial architectural heritage of Cockatoo Island.

Australian Architecture Association 
The Australian Architecture Association is the only organisation dedicated exclusively to increasing the public's awareness and appreciation of architecture.  AAA pursues this mission through a comprehensive programme of architecture tours in Sydney and Newcastle as well as lectures, exhibitions and special events.  Walk, cruise or ride with the highly trained AAA volunteer guides.

Australian Institute of Architects 
The Australian Institute of Architects aims to improve the quality of our built environment by promoting responsible and environmentally sustainable design. It is a national professional organization representing more than 10,000 architects across Australia and overseas, with chapters in each state and territory.

Members are encouraged to develop their skills through the Institute's continuing professional development program; they are obliged to behave in accordance with a code of professional conduct.

The Institute publishes Australia's premier architectural magazine, Architecture Australia, chapter bulletins and other publications, and provides practical building advisory services to the community through Archicentre.

The Institute's National Architecture Awards have been held annually since 1981. The judging process takes place in each state and territory; state and territory winners are judged for the national awards alongside winners in the other states.

NSW Architects Registration Board 
The NSW Architects Registration Board's key role is to protect consumers of architectural services by ensuring that architects provide services to the public in a professional and competent manner, accrediting architectural qualifications and providing information to government.

The Board also promotes an understanding of architecture in the community by funding research, organising talks and forums and partnering with organisations on projects relevant to increasing the public's understanding of architectural issues.
