GREEN POINTS: As Montana’s only LEED Platinum-certified
structure recognized by the Washington, D.C.-based U.S.
Green Building Council, this 8,300-square-foot (771-m2)
building houses several nonprofit environmental groups. The
building, which had been an abandoned 1940s grocery store,
was refurbished for less than the cost of new construction. Its
Earth-toned colors save 80 percent on energy, and solar panels
meet almost half of office electrical demands. About 92 percent
of deconstruction waste was recycled or reused, and 25 percent
of materials came from sources within 500 miles (805 km) of
Billings. Other green features include rooftop clerestories, cooling
with outside air, radiant-floor heating, exterior rigid insulation,
composting toilets and waterwise plantings.
