Fantasy boundary. “ArchStoyaniye 2007. Summer”

“ArchStoyaniye” festival becomes special artistic and architectural space, important rendezvous point for the architects and the artists, whose creative fantasies are personified into reality in Nicola-Lenivets village and in natural-historical preserve “Ugra” in the Kaluga province. 2007 did not become exception - in spite of very bad weather there were many participants and spectators. The assigned theme of the festival - “Boundary” (i.e. the relationship of boundary and infinite) – gave participants possibilities for architectural and philosophical interpretations.

The most noticeable objects of the third landscape festival in the open air (which now has acquired status of international) became the objects of the main participants: the artist of Nikolay Polisskyi and Dutch command West 8.

Nikolay Polisskyi, who traditionally realizes his objects in “ArchStoyaniye” together with the inhabitants of the village, united into the artel “Nicola-Lenivetskie promisly”, presented the object “Empire boundaries”. Specifically, this impressive by its scales object was the first creation which the spectators could see leading to the spot. Fascinating impression gave the background of wooden “pagan temple” - the sky, tightened by lead clouds, and pouring rain. At night spectacle became a real magic - enormous spark plugs were lit between the figured posts.

The second dominant of festival became the object of landscape city-planning bureau West 8 (Netherlands) by the name “Shishkin house”. Dutch answer to the theme “Boundary”, declared by curators, was the use of a special structural element - the gabion, filled with pine lumps instead of the stones. The concept of architects assumed landing trees and creating several units, which would limit - not close – park space, gradually merging with nature.

It was possible to realize only main object - “Shishkin house”. As a result it was necessary to change construction. The grid was put on the wooden frame and empty space was filled with lumps.

Besides the realization of basic object, the architects from West 8 conducted the four-day seminar “Vocation of the place” for the students from different countries. The objects, as a result, composed the interior of “Shishkin house”. Each architect developed his theme, connected with the park “Ugra”.

One more foreign participant in the festival was European organization KAJAWEST. KAJAWEST arranged in the Nicola-Lenivets two-week international seminar “Infinity in Russia”, where young people from Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Italy and Belorussia discussed on the theme proposed by festival.

For the work on the artistic objects forty people were shared into the groups, reflecting the theme “boundary - infinite”. Two girls from Poland created the wooden painted circle, which then was gone down to the water and whirled, creating the effect of the black hole. The idea of participants was realization of boundary not as a line, but as one point. Many interpretations were on theme of the infinity symbol - “The tape of Moebius”. For example, the object “Visual illusion”, which consists half of the real object, half - of the reflection in the water.

“Boundary” became not only theme for the artistic and philosophical searches of architects, but also actual question for “ArchStoyaniye” festival, which draws an increasing quantity of people. Will it be possible for people to limit themselves and to contact with nature in this architectural space harmoniously as before? The following festival will show it.
